The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 最令人称赞的是舞台设计，这么简单的 呈现形式讲了一个温情的真实故事，体现了导演的能力。
陌生和人群都可能成为恐惧的发源地，但在那个世界为之震颤的时刻，它们成为了共感和良善的代名词。生动紧凑、感人动人，虽然整体表达相当主旋律和正能量，但并没稀释灾难造成的心灵创伤、回避灾难辐射出的社会阴影，舞台设计简约又精巧，场景变换、情绪投射皆得到有效呈现，群像刻画也相当出彩，两个群体各个身份的角色不断跳跃转换却逻辑清晰情绪贯通，足见卡司个人的表演能力和团体间的化学反应。官摄版整体运镜和剪辑也相当不错，最大程度留存了舞台感的同时，也关注和强化了部分设计和表演上的小细节。
应该看现场，效果会更好，虽然没有那个观看的环境，却能够对其构造的环境感同身受。

原来这是电影啊...音乐剧百老汇版的官摄，看着很欢乐，也没有刻意渲染悲情，有些感动
四星给演员，这么简单的场地全靠演技撑起来了

精彩到想要全文背诵。100分钟欢乐与感动的交织，更为可贵的是故事背后一个个鲜活的真实的个体。剧组仅用12名演员、12把椅子、2张桌子就将5天7000人在甘德镇上经历浓缩演绎，剧情流畅、转场自然，舞台调度令人折服。歌曲演绎也同样出色，几乎每一名演员都得到了充分展现个人才能的机会，对于各类乐器的运用和气氛的烘托也相当到位。以真实故事为背景打造的剧本，用令人信服的方式展现了小镇居民的热情好客如何冲破语言、文化、宗教的隔阂，描绘一幅灾难面前深入援手，毫无保留给予支持的感人画面。官摄唯一的遗憾恐怕就是在整体节奏的把控上，似乎有意做了放缓处理，相较几年前发布的原声专辑，听感有所下降。

昨天又看了一遍，官摄太好了，依然热泪盈眶，so here we are, where the world has come together
遗憾去年国内巡演的取消，终于在9•11二十周年看上了CFA官摄真是纪念意义非凡。对比二十年前肉身被困、消沉迷茫又无助的乘客们，而今身陷疫情阴云的我们是如此的相似。同时这又是一部彰显人性之光的作品，因而在形式上也完全依赖人/演员的力量，简约而不简单的舞台、极富节奏感的编排一气呵成，数度让我拍手叫好。对于曾经的苦难若是能以这样的一种形式去记录、去缅怀，自然也必将成为一代佳作。
没条件去看现场的穷人表示这部音乐剧光是bootleg就已经超好看了，默默希望百老汇/伦敦西区音乐剧放出官摄变成常态，为了不影响档期卖票完全可以延后几年再放出来，那些超珍贵的OBC摄影只存起来真的是太可惜了~

2019去西区没有看这部，第二年中国巡演取消，听了两年Me and the Sky，第三年终于等来官摄😭
当你能自己找到欢愉的时候，你就不再需要他了，人无论多大年纪都要成长和改变啊。
在这疫情遍布的鬼社会下，麻木不仁才能不怄气，至少少怄气。
